This weekend was one long anticipated by our fellow Noles. Regardless if you are a huge sports fan like myself, or just kind of fall into the mix of the chaos surrounding our sports driven university everyone knew what this weekend consisted of. Undoubtedly this weekend was the biggest event in college football, as number one ranked Alabama played number three ranked Florida State. I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to travel to Atlanta Georgia to experience and watch this event unfold first hand. The amount of fans from both teams that swarmed the streets was incredible and something I have never experienced before. Although it was a huge match up, the fans from both teams respected one another and made the weekend a fun rivalry, which is sometimes hard to do as die hard fans.
Traveling to Atlanta with three of my best friends was a blast. The four hour ride flew by and I felt as if this was the perfect opportunity to ask their views of writing. I knew their answers would all be unique because all of our interests, majors, and personalities have many differences which makes our friendship that much better. We started off talking about syllabus week, how our classes were, what kind of homework we had, what our professors were like and so on. I then started talking about my ENC 3416 class and how much I enjoyed it. I stated that I had not really taken a college class that lets you incorporate your interests so much into your writing and assignments. My friends all thought that was amazing as usually they are assigned work that comes straight from the book and their grades are based on "correct answers," such as math problems. So I began to talk about writing and why I enjoy it so much. Being a Editing, Writing, and Media major writing is a part of my everyday life in class but also at home. I write for professors, I write for my peers, and I write for myself. I express how I feel and generate thoughts into my writing. I also write to stay organized, my agenda is a BIG part of my life. I write my class times, assignments, meetings, and of course every single FSU sporting event is documented in my agenda. So I casually brought up writing in conversation and I very nonchalantly documented what my friends said. I decided not to ask questions in a structured way because I did not want their answers to seem scripted.
All three of my friends in discussion were females. Haley is a political science major and like myself she mainly talked about using writing as a form or organization in her every day life. She also stated in the midst of conversation how she uses writing to express her political views on certain topics in a professional way (super interesting). Katherine is a computer science major and she stated that she hates writing because she feels she is not good at it, I said writing does not have to be something you are good at, there are many forms of writing and not all forms are structured. She stated the only writing she does is for her assignments, however I asked, do you ever post on social media? She answered well yes of course and my social media accounts are something I take very serious and edit multiple times before posting. I explained that was a form of writing! Finally my friend Julia majors in child psychology so she took this conversation a little more analytical as expected. She stated that writing to her is a implication of the personality a person has, which I disagreed. However she likes, but not loves to write. She uses writing in work however most of her writing is based on outside sources, with supporting details. She does not do a lot of opinionated writing.
All in all this amazing weekend of sports and travel with friends allowed me to access a more deeper understanding view of what writing is. Although the outcome is not what so many of us had hoped for, I am still a true Nole fan and can not wait for next weekends first home game. GO NOLES!!!!
